This object looks like a piece of art. But in fact, it is “just” a mathematical curve, called 7/3 torus knot. Imagine a donut, and then tie a cord around it in some interesting way. This is what happened here; only the torus has been streched vertically quite a bit in order to yield a vertical sculptural object.
The cool thing about this sculpture is that it is a bit flexible; when you touch it wobbles… fun to play with it when it is standing on your family room table.
This wobbling sculpture has another interesting feature. The thickness of the curve is not the same everywhere. Instead, the thickness is computed from the curvature of the curve: At points where the curve is strongly bent, the thickness is smaller; at points where the curve is almost straight, the thickness is greater. This is one of the main ingredients for its aesthetics.
